Sun Peaks BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA ~ March 3-10, 2019 (Sunday – Sunday) Trip Information & Pricing for MNYSC Club Members
Sun Peaks is the second largest ski resort in Canada (behind Whistler Ski Resort) with 4,270 skiable acres of terrain. It has 130+ runs and 2,894 feet of vertical, with a good spread of green, blue, single black and double black trails. An amazing playground for intermediates, with lots of long groomed fall line runs, Sun Peaks is also very good for beginners and advanced skiers/riders, with terrain across multiple mountains. Next to the village is Sundance Mountain which has easy green and blue runs. Mt Tod is the main part of the resort. Behind the village is the north facing Mt Morrisey that has meandering blue runs and a few steep bump runs rated as double black. Skiers’ right off the Burfield boundary are lots of fun trees. A major highlight of Sun Peaks is the Sun Guides hosting program. Other highlights are the distinct lack of crowds and the fact that the Village elevation is only 4,117 feet and the summit elevation is 7,060 feet.
Sun Peaks Village is a European-style, ski-through village filled with quaint shops, cafes, eateries, après ski, bars and nightlife. The layout of the village makes it fuss free to get around. There is a myriad of other activities such as a day spa, dog sledding, ice skating, snowshoeing, tubing, horse drawn sleigh rides, Cross Country Skiing, and snowmobile tours. You won’t lose track of your friends, yet there’s more than enough terrain, bars, shops and restaurants to keep everyone entertained for a week.
Sun Peaks Grand Hotel ~ This 4 star property has a convenient ski in/out location in the heart of the village. Guests can enjoy all the full services such as Mantles Restaurant and Lounge, Night Club, Pub, room service, ski valet and Business Centre. Enjoy exclusive use of the health club with an indoor entrance to a heated outdoor pool, 3 hot tubs, well equipped gym, steam room and sauna. Price for XC Skiers: Sun Peaks has 38 km of Nordic trails, accessible right from the ski area village. The price of the trip including downhill skiing is $1800, but with the $215 deduction for no lifts, the price is $1585 for anyone cross country skiing.

Everyone MUST have a valid Passport to return to the US from Canada US Citizens going through a US – Canadian ground crossing can utilize other forms of identification. However, a passport is strongly recommended in the off chance that, for some reason, someone had to fly home from Canada while on the trip. Without a valid passport, flying would not be possible.
Discussion regarding the Air and travel to Sun Peaks via Seattle
Last year the Suffolk Skidaddlers used Air Canada for their trip to Big White, which is in British Columbia, as is Sun Peaks. The group flew from NY (LGA) to Toronto. Upon arrival in Toronto, the group had to go through Canadian Customs, then board a bus to another terminal, and then get to the connecting flight to Kelowna (in BC), followed by a bus ride to the resort. The flight to Toronto was delayed slightly, so they were very pressed for time to make the Kelowna connection. On the return trip, there was a delay in departure from Kelowna and when they arrived in Toronto, 7 out of the 40 people on the plane did not have all of their luggage and were not cleared by US Customs to board the plane from Toronto to NY. Air Canada paid for the hotel lodging that night and the 7 were split up onto two flights home the following day. Several weeks later, another small group taking the same return flight from Kelowna experienced a mechanical delay and missed the connecting flight, again having to spend the night in Toronto, at Air Canada’s expense. Aside from Air Canada’s own issues, we learned that the US Customs office in the Toronto closes at 9 PM, and anyone not cleared by that time cannot board a flight to the US.
Regarding the upcoming ski season, Air Canada has not made any changes to their flight schedules, so there is a definite potential for missed planes and/or luggage. When booking the air portion for this trip, we looked at two options. (1) The flights from NY (LGA) to Toronto, then to Kelowna, and then a 2¾ hours bus ride to Sun Peaks. (2) A non-stop direct flight from JFK (or EWR) to Seattle, and then a bus ride to Sun Peaks, which is approximately 5½ hours. The total travel time for both routes was almost identical. Yes, it is a relatively long bus ride from Seattle, but the chance for lost luggage and/or missing a connection is minimal and a US ~ Canada border crossing on a bus is much easier than in an airport. By comparison, when travelling to Aspen via Denver, the bus ride is 4½ to 5 hours and everyone survives that trip. For anyone wondering about flying from Seattle to Kelowna, those flights utilize 50 – 60 passenger planes and luggage is very limited.
